Guilford County authorities catch inmate following transport escape

On Friday morning May 22, 2020 at approximately 9:40 A.M., Inmate Joshua Lee Stewart escaped custody while being transported from the Guilford County Detention Center to the Alamance County Detention Center. Mr. Stewart was being returned to Alamance Co. on a charge of Failure to Appear (Violation of Court Order). Mr. Stewart will be charged with Felony Escape, Felony Assault With A Deadly Weapon, and Felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle. Mr. Stewart is not believed to be armed. On Friday morning May 22, 2020 at approximately 9:40 A.M., Inmate Joshua Lee Stewart escaped custody while being transported from the Guilford County Detention Center to the Alamance County Detention Center. Mr. Stewart was being returned to Alamance Co. on a charge of Failure to Appear (Violation of Court Order).

Two Alamance County Detention Officers were in the transport van along with Mr. Stewart and another inmate.

Mr. Stewart told the Detention Officers that he was sick and had to vomit. The Officer pulled over at Arlington and E. McCulloch St. in Greensboro to render aid by giving Mr. Stewart a vomit bag.

Mr. Stewart fled on foot with one Detention Officer in pursuit. Mr. Stewart got into a vehicle with the keys left in the ignition switch. The Detention Officer attempted to open the driver’s door and was dragged a short distance. Mr. Stewart fled in the vehicle.

The Detention Officer was treated for minor injuries.

Mr. Stewart abandoned the vehicle nearby and fled on foot.

The Greensboro Police Department searched for Mr. Stewart, and an update from the Alamance County Sheriff's Office the evening of May 22 indicated that Stewart was apprehended and taken into custody within hours of his escape.

Mr. Stewart will be charged with Felony Escape, Felony Assault With A Deadly Weapon, and Felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.
