A suspect in a local fraud and extortion case has been taken into custody in South Carolina, according to officials with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday July 22 at 12:46 p.m., Alamance County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to First Horizon Bank in Graham along with Graham Police Department in reference to a report by the bank of possible fraud and extortion.

A male victim reported that two men posing as law enforcement officers from South Carolina threatened to arrest him if he did not wire a large sum of money to an unknown account. No funds were transferred. The suspects initially contacted the victim by phone.

Detectives learned the suspects had earlier driven to a local car dealership in a pickup truck, under the pretense of a test drive. One of the two suspects, Christopher Jason Calhoun, was given a vehicle which he used to meet the victim and take him to the bank.

The second suspect, Steven Ray Timmons, remained at the dealership. While there, it is believed that Timmons phoned the victim, also claiming to be an officer from South Carolina. Mr. Timmons later fled on foot from the car dealership in Burlington. The vehicle belonging to the dealership was recovered. The pickup truck was also recovered.

Mr. Calhoun was arrested and taken to the Alamance County Detention Center. Although Timmons escaped on foot, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on July 31 that he has been taken into custody in South Carolina. Timmons will presumably now be transported to Alamance County to face multiple charges.

Calhoun and Mr. Timmons will each face one count of Felony Extortion, one count of Felony Second Degree Kidnapping, and one count of Misdemeanor Impersonate a Law Enforcement Officer.
