Accident at loading dock results in death of Rockingham County man

A tragic accident at the Mebane ABB plant in Orange County claimed the life of a Rockingham County man on Tuesday afternoon, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed. According to their report, 50-year-old Eugene Early McDowell IV, a resident of Eden, North Carolina, was struck by a tractor-trailer at a loading dock at the ABB facility just after noon on Tuesday. 

A tragic accident at the Mebane ABB plant in Orange County claimed the life of a Rockingham County man on Tuesday afternoon, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed. 

According to their report, 50-year-old Eugene Early McDowell IV, a resident of Eden, North Carolina, was struck by a tractor-trailer at a loading dock at the ABB facility just after noon on Tuesday. 

Deputies and investigators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, along with emergency responders from the Mebane Fire Department and Orange County EMS, responded to the manufacturing facility shortly after receiving the dispatch at 12:30 pm. 

A witness reported that McDowell backed his truck into the loading dock and exited his vehicle. Another truck struck him as it backed into the bay next to him. Despite receiving CPR and other medical interventions, McDowell died at the scene. 

The incident is still under investigation, but at this time, no charges have been filed. ABB, a technology firm with roots in Europe, purchased the old General Electric facility along Industrial Drive and began expanding the facility last year.
