Mother of local student charged with filing false police report

On Wednesday March 11, the Alamance County Sheriff's Office received information that another student at Southern Alamance Middle School was sexually assaulted by 18-year-old Brandon Lane, and that Mr. Samuel Bradly Freeze junior varsity wrestling coach at Southern Alamance High, knew about it, and did not stop it. When investigators and school resource officers began to investigate this portion of the incident, they found that the student, who was reported as the new victim, was actually never assaulted. Investigators found witnesses who reported that the student’s mother, Melissa Marie King, made up the story and forced her daughter to tell officials.

Investigators found witnesses who reported that the student’s mother, Melissa Marie King, made up the story and forced her daughter to tell officials.

It is believed this was an attempt to have leverage over Alamance-Burlington School System, where the mother planned to file a lawsuit against the school system in the future. Ms. King was reported to have spoken with local media outlets during this investigation, on Wednesday March 11.

As a result, on Thursday March 12, 2020, Ms. Melissa King was arrested and charged with Filing a False Report to Law Enforcement. She was booked into the Alamance County Jail and received a $500.00 unsecured bond. Mrs. King has a first appearance scheduled for April 1, 2020 at 9:00 am.

On Thursday March 5, the Alamance County Sheriff's Office and the Alamance-Burlington School System were notified about multiple assaults that occurred on a school bus, involving Southern Middle School and Southern High School students.

School Resource Officers and Investigators from the Special Victims Unit spoke to victims and found video evidence of one high school student physically assaulting and attempting to sexually assault a middle school student. As the investigation continued, Investigators found evidence that the bus driver knew about the incidents occurring, and allowed them to continue.

Investigators initially obtained warrants against Lane and Freeze for multiple charges related to the incidents. As a result of the follow-up investigation and King’s arrest, however, Lane and Freeze are no longer facing charges.
