Authorities warn of phone scam targeting local residents

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office and the Alamance County Clerk of Court, have obtained information from County residents who have received phone calls from individuals claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Office. The scammer tells the citizen that a Bench Warrant for their arrest has been issued for failing to answer a Jury Summons. THIS IS A SCAM. Residents are advised not to give any personal information and disconnect the call. The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office and the Alamance County Clerk of Court, have obtained information from County residents who have received phone calls from individuals claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Office.

The scammer tells the citizen that a Bench Warrant for their arrest has been issued for failing to answer a Jury Summons.

The scammer tells the citizen to purchase a gift card for a specific amount, then call the scammer back and give the card numbers in order to avoid being arrested.

The victim is then told to cut up the gift cards and mail the pieces to the Alamance County Clerk of Court.

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office will not call residents for failing to report for jury duty, failing to answer a warrant or summons, nor ask for money over the phone.
