Elbert Montague Lake, 88, of Fernandina Beach, FL, formerly from Mebane, NC, passed away on Sunday, February 9th at Wraner Center for Caring.
Elbert was born in Washington, DC on February 26, 1931 to the late Orin Montague Lake and Helen Robinson Lake Gray. His father died when he was five years old. In the early 40's, his mother married W.R. Gray and moved to Mebane, NC to open the Western Auto store which the family operated until 1970. He was a graduate of Mebane High School, and also received his Bachelor's Degree from Elon College and Masters Degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.
In addition to operating the Western Auto, Elbert also had a long career in education beginning as a teacher in Alamance County. He taught History at Mebane High School and was part of the inaugural faculty at Eastern Alamance. Later, he became the principal at E.M. Yoder Elementary. In Rockingham County, he was principal of Ruffin High School and Stoneville High School before moving to positions at the Central Office.
While in Mebane, he was a member of the Mebane United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and enjoyed singing in the choir. He was also a long-time member of the Kiwanis Clubs of both Mebane and Eden and served as Lt. Governor.
He is survived by his widow Phyllis Lake of Fernandina Beach, FL and his children, Dwight Lake (Sheila) of Mayodan, NC; Lynda Perry (Mike) of Eden, NC, Monte Lake (Gina) of Reidsville, NC, and Gary Lake of Hickory, NC; five grandchildren, Missy Perry Bailey (Fred), Jennifer Lake Mauro (Greg), Meredith Lake Musulin (Steve), Cecil Lake (Amanda), and Roby Lake (Taylor); ten great-grandchildren, Ellie Tingen, Ethan Tingen, Lillie Kate Mauro, Luke Mauro, Josh Musulin, Aubrey Musulin, Josiah Lake, Levi Lake, Trent Lake, and Charleigh Lake.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his step-father W.R. Gray, and his great-grandchild Anderson Lake.
