The Mebane Gators won the 2019 Alamance County Mite Football Championship 27-0 over the Gibsonville Yellow Jackets on Thursday, November 14 at Eastern High School. The victory improved the Gators record to 8-0.
“Congratulations to the Yellow Jackets on a good season. They are very talented and well coached team,” head coach Todd Wood said.
In the championship game, the Gators were led by Logan Luang Sy and Kamaal Smith. For the last two seasons, Luang Sy has scored 90 percent of the Gators’ touchdowns.
“He can run, throw , catch and tackle as good as any player I’ve coached in the last 17 years,” Wood said of Sy. “I’ve coached in 15 county championships and Logan is the only two-time county championship MVP I’ve coached. The coaching staff and I thought Kamaal could have easily won the MVP for the championship game also. He and Logan both were unstoppable running the football.”
The Gators were led up front by offensive lineman Evan Hambright, Zaydin Harris, Dylan Strout, Alfonso Gonzalez-Turner, Isaac Williams, Prosper Alexander, and Ranen Pinnex, running backs Major Hubbard and Brandon Lindsey, tight end and fullbacks Donavon Wallace and Jace Evans. Quarterback Drew Easter did a great job of running the offense and spreading the ball around to all of the Gators’ backs.
Defensively, the Gators starters only gave up two touchdowns all season. The defense was led by Luang Sy, Smith, Alexander, Easter, Evans, Hambright, Harris, Hubbard, Strout, Gonzalez-Turner, Wallace, Lindsey, Preston Utley and Justin McDougall.
“The Gators would like to thank the Mebane Rec. for all their support this season”. Wood said. “Special thanks to our teams Mom Kristen Leblanc and Belinda Williams for making sure we had water all season.”
The Gators are coached by Head Coach Todd Wood, Offensive line/Def. Coach: Grant Hamlett, Drill Sargent: David Easter, Offensive line Coach: Jon Pendergraph, Asst. Offensive Coordinator: Sou Vannavong.
