Eastern golfing standout headed to national amateur tourney

Eastern Alamance rising senior golfer Nick Mathews, who has helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back NCHSAA 3A state championship finals appearances, qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio July 15 through July 20. 

Eastern Alamance rising senior golfer Nick Mathews has qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Tournament, to be held in Toledo, Ohio in mid-July. 

Playing at the Country Club of Salisbury on Monday, June 11, Mathews shot a 3-under-par 68, making him one of three local players to qualify for the national tournament. Mathews now moves on to the U.S. Junior Amateur, which will be hosted at the Inverness Club in Toledo July 15 through July 20. 

Mathews has shined for the Eastern Alamance High golf team the past couple years, helping lead the Eagles to back-to-back state finals appearances. Following his upcoming senior year, he plans to attend N.C. State.
