One of the most widely-anticipated pre-Holiday events in the city of Mebane, the annual Christmas Parade, returns to the downtown area the evening of Friday, Dec. 2. Floats and vehicles participating in the parade will begin lining up at 5:30 p.m., with the parade starting at 7:00 p.m.. Spectators will want to line Center and Clay Streets well in advance in order to ensure a good view of the festivities.
Mebane’s Christmas parade is the only one of its kind in Alamance County held at night, and will feature a wide variety of floats, cars and trucks, military, fire, and police vehicles, marching bands, dancers, and other forms of entertainment, climaxed at the very end of the parade line with an appearance by Santa Claus himself. During the parade, the popular local Mason Lovette Band will be performing at Whiskey Sowers along Fourth Street, providing additional entertainment.
The parade route begins at the intersection of Second and Clay Streets, running down Clay Street to Fifth Street before taking a right turn at the Lofts at White Furniture building. The parade will then run the city block from Clay to Center Street along Fifth Street, taking a right turn onto Center Street. The parade will then run through the heart of downtown, parallel to the railroad tracks, making its way down to the end of the route near Charles Street.
Floats will disperse from the parking lot of the American Legion building, behind E.M. Yoder Elementary School. All other entries, with exception of bands, will disperse in front of Yoder Elementary. Parents must arrange a place to meet their children after the parade’s conclusion, as vehicles will not be allowed in the E.M. Yoder Elementary area.
Bands will line up, starting at 5:30 p.m., at Walker’s Funeral Home’s parking lot, and disperse after the parade in the Living Free Ministries Thrift Store parking lot, where the band buses will be directed to park.
Members of the Mebane Business Association are invited to Lofts at White Furniture for cookies and cocoa prior to the start of the parade. The refreshments will be in the kiln room, near the leasing office, between 5:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m..
In case of inclement weather, an alternate date of Friday, Dec. 9 has been set, but the parade is expected to be held regardless of most weather conditions, including rain or cold temperatures.
