The Western North Carolina, Western District Social Action Commission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC), Bethel – Reidsville, Johnson Chapel – Mebane, and Quinn Chapel – Roxboro are hosting a Juneteenth celebration in the city of Mebane on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Mebane Holt Street Park, 411 W Holt St, Mebane, NC.
The celebration is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
These partner organizations are commemorating the observance of Juneteenth with food, live entertainment, vendors, arts, poetry, and dance.
Juneteenth is about the journey and achievement of African-Americans. It is a story of pride, resilience and determination that helped to overcome tragedy and live in triumph. Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging respect for all cultures. This event will pay homage to those gone before us, those who have paved the road to freedom and serve as a means of hope to live in peace, truth and reconciliation with all people and cultures. We encourage everyone to participate to strengthen the ties that bind with unity and peace as our goals.
As we know it, US President Abraham Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862; however, the news of this proclamation did not reach Galveston, Texas until June 19th, 1865.
Servicemen marched through Galveston reading General Order, No. 3 at various locations, one including Reedy Chapel AMEC. From this moment, Juneteenth would be born growing in recognition and local observances.
Join us this Juneteenth in Mebane!
