William Thomas Amick

On Friday, November 20, 2020, William “Tom” Thomas Amick, loving father and passionate businessman, passed away on his 78th birthday in Fishers, IN.

Born and raised in Mebane, NC, Tom lived a happy and successful life, traveling and enjoying the world with his daughters, Lauryn and Christine, and their mother, Lisa. Anyone who met him learned quickly of his love for his daughters, playing golf, watching sports (especially UNC Basketball), and fine wine. Tom’s charismatic presence and deep, southern drawl captivated every room that he entered. He was best known for his charm, his contagious laugh, and his drive and determination for everything that he set his mind to.

Over his four-decade career, Tom gained a wealth of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience, with 30 years as a senior executive with Johnson & Johnson (J&J). As Vice President of the Ortho Biotech Oncology Franchise, he was instrumental in building the franchise into a multi-billion dollar operation. He then held the positions of President of Janssen-Ortho, Inc., managing the entire J&J pharmaceutical and biotechnology portfolio for Canada, followed by President of Ortho Biotech Europe, and finally as an executive with J&J Development Corporation. After retiring from J&J in 2004, he served as the President and CEO of Aldagen, a stem cell research company, until 2010. During his tenure at Aldagen, Tom also served as Chairman of the board for Discovery Laboratories, where he became CEO in 2010. In 2015, Tom officially retired from the industry as the President and CEO of biotechnology company Dendreon.

Tom earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Elon University, where he received the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2010, as well as completing executive coursework at Kellogg School of Management, Harvard Business School, and Darden School of Business.

Tom took the world by storm. To know him was to love him. He will forever be remembered for his warmth and generosity and will be deeply missed by family and friends around the world.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
