Eastern Alamance High women’s golf star Emily Mathews won the NCHSAA 3A individual golf state championship on Tuesday at the Beacon Ridge Golf and Country Club in West End. Mathews’ score of 71 made her the only 3A participant to shoot under par, and guided her to a commanding victory over the field, winning by eight strokes. The second place finisher - Layla Meric of Cuthbertson High School - finisher her round with a 7-over-par score of 79.
Mathews was spectacular for her 18 holes. She birdied the par four 3rd hole, holing out in three on the 356-yard hole. Then on the 462-yard par five 16th hole she got home in four, matching the birdie from the front nine. Mathews finisher her round with a total of four birdies and three bogeys.
This mark’s Eastern High’s first individual golf state championship, and the first high school state golf championship to come to Mebane since 1960, when Jay Harris won the men’s North Carolina individual state golf title as a representative of Mebane High School. Only a sophomore, Mathews will have a chance to bring multiple more golf championships to Eastern High School over the next couple of years.
