Eastern Alamance’s varsity wrestling team returned to the mat on Saturday for the Andy Hawks Duals, as the Eagles got a chance to compete against several local rivals including Bartlett Yancey, Cummings, Eastern Guilford, Jordan Matthews, and Southern Alamance on the campus of Cummings High School in Burlington.
EAHS earned dual team victories over Cummings and Jordan Matthews, and had a series of solid individual performances in the matchups with Bartlett Yancey and Southern Alamance.
Along with Eastern’s two dual team match victories at the Andy Hawks Duals, EAHS’s 106-pounder Elijah Watson showed why he’s a big part of Eastern’s future on the wrestling mat, and a strong candidate to reach the NCHSAA 3A State Championships at the Greensboro Coliseum next month.
The Eagles had a strong performance as they knocked off Cummings, 42-24. Chasen Phillips pinned Hezekiah Pinnix in the first round (1:37) at 152 pounds to get the Eagles rolling, and Christopher Solomon followed with a first round (1:09) pin of Felipe Aguiar Perez in the 160-pound weight class. Eastern also got forfeits from Jahzion Patterson at 138 pounds, Kaitlyn Watson at 113 pounds, and Mason Tanner at 132 pounds.
EAHS also earned a 42-33 victory over Jordan Matthews. Jett Giovani got a big win for the Eagles over the Jets, as he pinned Josiah Torrain in the first round (1:12) in the 285-pound weight class. Jahzion Patterson also got a match victory for EAHS against Southern Alamance, as he pinned Dylan Maloney in the second round (2:45). Christopher Schild added a win for the Eagles over Peyton Neal in the third round (5:06) at 170 pounds. Despite those victories, however, Eastern lost 66-18 to the Patriots in the dual team match.
In a 51-24 setback to Bartlett Yancey, EAHS got a win from Victoria Gonzales in the 285-pound weight class, as Gonzales pinned BY’s Jacob Walker in the second round (3:44). Kaitlyn Watson also got a forfeit victory for the Eagles in the 113-pound weight class. Watson got another forfeit win for the Eagles as their only points in a 78-6 loss to Eastern Guilford.
The Eagles close out the regular season this week, as Eastern will travel to Cedar Ridge for the team’s final Central Conference dual team match the evening of Thursday, January 19. Then on Saturday, the Eagles will participate in the Central Conference Tournament. The NCHSAA Women’s Mideast Regional is scheduled for January 26, while the Eagles will look to quality for the State Championships at the NCHSAA 3A Men’s Mideast Regional on January 28.
